Easter--from Naomi

It is Sunday night about bedtime. We've had a great restful day. It started out beautiful and sunny, but after lunch if started raining and has not stopped. We originally had plans to go to Porcon today, but things did not work out, so we stayed here. I'm glad we did because we were able to attend church at Monte Sion. You who have been here know how they welcome us to worship with them. Since it was Easter, Pastor Helmer preached this morning. For those of you who have not been, usually one of the pastors with the group preaches in English while someone translates into Spanish. Pastor Helmer, of course, delivered the message in Spanish, which meant most of us didn't have a clue what he was saying, however, we knew he was talking about the resurrection and smiling the whole sermon...it was a very enjoyable worship service.
After church, we had a large, delicious meal, as usual. Everyone is claiming to have already gained 5 pounds and we've just gotten started. They feed us so well here. This afternoon we did get to go to the banos and take the hot baths. Dr. Beller pulled a sneaky on us and had a massage instead of a bath. But, it cost him though...$6.00. He reported it was the best massage he's had in years. The rest of us didn't know we had a choice. It just shows how observant Dr. Beller is, and he doesn't even speak Spanish.

This week is nation health week here and a reporter from CNN came to the clinic yesterday and did a story on us. Actually, it was CN&N--Cajamarca News and Notices. We got to watch it on the news tonight so now we feel like we are all celebrities.

Maggie, you asked about Jamie, Nancy, Orlando and Raquel. They are all doing well and taking great care of us as usual. You also asked about anything interesting that happened. We thought we were going to get to deliver a baby yesterday. A man brought a woman to the clinic who looked like she was about to pop a baby out just any minute and the man said she was having the baby. She was kinda wobbling around so we put it into to high gear trying to find a place where we could lay her down and examine her. Before we even found a place to lay her down, Dr. Wilbur, Dr. Welsh and I had a grand discussion about who was going to get to deliver the baby, which I won because I saw her first and got dibs on her...it didn't matter that they had a little more experience than me...OK...a great deal more experience, but they were gracious enough to let me think I was going to get to do it and let me examine her first. Much to my disappointment and most of the rest of the team, the husband was drunk and didn't know what he was talking about. She still has a good month to go before any birthing is going to go on. I was even looking for some castor oil to speed things along, but that was not in our medicine inventory. We gave her some vitamins and sent them on their way.

Ruth, Doyne and I are hoping all the junk you sold at the yard sale was mostly our junk and that you made us bunches of money while we are off down here spending it!

Everyone is having a great time. All are well and well fed.

Love, Mom/Naomi

Raquel!! That's her name--I'm so embarrassed I couldn't remember. Good to hear all are doing well.

It's cold here! According to the news cast, this is one of the coldest Easters on record. In LIT they reported it was colder on Easter than on Christmas. The last three nights’ it has been below freezing. Poor plants; there will be no acorn crop this year (noted by all deer hunting enthusiast.)

Nonetheless, Easter was good. Got to see most Aunts and Uncles and cousins except Aunt Geneva and family—she slipped and fell on a houseboat and sprang some ligaments and wasn’t able to travel. Rhonda Halbrook and family were also missing due to Dana being in the hospital from an allergic reaction to some type of medication—all according to Aunt Sue.

Also was able to visit with Nanny, Pawpaw, and Aunt Martha. Easter was slim this year--all who were in Peru were missed (especially you, mom). It’s okay; however, because we’re so proud of what you’re doing.

Sounds like Dr. Beller is catching on quickly. Sounds like from J. Covington’s comment they are doing so serious teeth pulling. WOW!

How many patients have you and the others seen thus far?

Did someone record your television appearance so we can see it here?

Too bad about the baby; that would have been very exciting. I would like to hear Uncle David’s interpretation of the “grand discussion” between you and the two doctors, and how you “won” dibs. It wouldn’t surprise me if the story involves tying the doctors down to chairs with those beaded necklaces in a back room—JUST KIDDING! You have a wonderful passion to help people and I love that about you. To bad you can’t go in July—she might have the baby then.

Wow, sounds like you had a very exciting Easter! I don't know whether to be comforted by your enthusiasm to deliver a baby or to remember to steer clear of you when Annie is due! haha! just kidding of course! We miss you but are proud your having a great time! I'm gonna tell everyone here that you all were on CNN - they'll never know the difference!

Thanks, Naomi, for the Easter update. I'm sure Austin wanted to avoid delivering a baby. . .he did a few of ours and I can't say I recommend him! (jk)

Austin, the group in Cuzco is:
"Los Siervos de los Pobres del Tercer Mundo." They had an FSSP priest down there--he was supposed to be there for 5 years, but the info. I read was from 2002, so I don't know if he's still there.
Everything is fine here. Miss you. Mary & kids
